| The culture of Southwestern New Mexico is made of a blend of Native American, Mexican, Spanish, and Anglo. The Heritage Room pays tribute to these four cultural backgrounds that have had such a profound impact on the region. The room contains an eclectic mixture of art work including the large Delmas Howe murals, historical paintings, wood carvings, and bronze sculpture. As the room had originally been a bar, there is a bar in one corner with the mural on the wall remaining from the days of the bar. Displays on people who had a direct impact on local culture include cowboy author Eugene Manlove Rhodes and missionary "Preacher" Hunter Lewis. Just out the back door of the Heritage Room is the windmill patio, with a windmill brought from an area ranch and displays about local ranching. The Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway Interpretive and Visitor Center is on the other side of the patio, serving as the downtown visitor center and providing information to potential visitors and those wishing to relocate to the area. It is operated by the Museum in cooperation with the Scenic Byway, and its exhibits are considered a continuation of the Museum. |
